So that I could get an understanding of what my target audience would like to see in their music video, I created a survey using Survey Monkey. This is a great site that enabled me to create a ten question survey for free!
Once I reach 10 responses I will analyse my results as I believe that 10 is a good enough place to stop. This is because I would like to get on with my production as soon as possible and 10 will be enough to have a range of different opinions, especially as my questions ask for a reasoning behind responses - so this can mostly guarantee that I will have varied views. Having a wide range of responses will also enable me to meet many member's needs as it shows to me what is needed and what is not liked very much.
During the fourth week of school we completed a lot of tasks we firstly spent time making our pitch power-points which had all the details for our idea and what we wanted to put in our music video.
We then presented them to the class and got feedback on our ideas in small groups to make sure we could get into a deeper discussion and gain insightful feedback on what we could change/include and improve on with our ideas. After doing so I then uploaded my power-point presentation and my feedback to YouTube and then analysed them on my blog, picking out the key details.
I then created my job roles sheet with my partner showing all the jobs in which we have to do and who is allocated to do what job. By doing this it helps us get more organised and the work is evenly distributed between the pair of us. Also by having one we are able to use it as a checklist of what we have done and what we need to do.
As my partner and I have decided to use the song "Let You Go" by Thicke as our music video choice, we also had to dissect what exactly our target audience would like. This would enable us to create our music video in a style that would appeal to them, thus forming a positive level of feedback from them. In order to showcase our findings we have decided to create a Pinterest board that has a range of images highlighting what music they like, clothing they wear and more! Click the screenshot below to see it:
As a pair we have allocated who is doing which job during our music video project. We want to create an even amount of work on both of our behalves which can be demonstrated below:
My partner and I both sat down to decide whose pitch demonstrated a video that we were both more fond of. Although we were both very understanding and in favour of each other's video ideas, we have ultimately decided to stick with my song "Let U Go" by the unsigned girl group Thicke. We both believe that my idea is more unique so will be able to stand out to other videos as oppose to my partners choice which was also very good, click here to see his presentation for his song choice. I have many exciting ideas which we believe if done properly can do so well, we would also combine some of my partners ideas and merge them together to create a music video that we are both please with.
The song can be listened to here as well as my pitch and the focus group. If you click those links you can understand my idea that we will be using, which will be merged with my partners ideas later on.
We were asked to put together a powerpoint on all of my ideas for the song that I have chosen. In the presentation I talked about many things which I wanted to include in my music video.
Music Video Audience Feedback
The feedback that I got for my ideas of my music video were really suggestions to what I could do to make my music video even better, rather than change anything to it.
The group were curious about what characters I would use in the song and if I were to only use one person or more. They also were asking me loads of questions about my ideas which I mentioned in my pitch and I was justifying my points to them so they got a better understanding of what I wanted to create.
The strengths of my ideas where I was very precise on what I wanted each of my 5 scenes to look like and by showing video examples as well as explaining what I want my video to look like it gave them good visuals to understand what I was trying to say. Also they felt that the style of song I was doing and the type of scenes which I had matched each others mood and would create the right effect.
The weaknesses of my idea are that if it is not done correct by only using black and white it could make my work look somewhat boring and because the song is a slow song and by me only using black and white it could work in both a good way and a bad way but as I said in the video I would try and get everything lit to the best of my ability and create a nice mise-en-scene from it.
This video my Beyonce features some of the same stuff I want to do for my music video, the mainly thing firstly being how it is all in black and white which adds tot he whole song and again the song being about a relationship and being hurt relates to my song a lot. In this video Beyonces costume is very feminine and her costume is kept very minimal we see a lot of silhouettes in this video and it helps add mystery to the music video. I would like to do this is well because it can also be used to shown the mystery in a relationship and how no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors.
The style if this video is a very slow placed and softly edited video, with loads of shots that are shown in slow motion to emphasize certain parts in the video and I think this is a very effective way of trying to make some parts stand out because it can be done to emphasize anything but in this case it is used to stress emotion in the video whether it be happiness or sadness and this is effective to an audience because it can really make them think or make think of a previous experience which they could relate to and draw them in.
The narrative in this video is that we see Beyonce going to old locations of where her and her partner shared memories and as she is there she has flashbacks of the good memories they shared.
Mariah Carey - Fantasy
In this music instead of everything being all sad we see a more happy and up-beat atmosphere in the video. This video is full of colour and fits the song perfectly, the bright colours help keep the up-beat video alive and the many different scene locations help add to the video making it very eye catching. Mariah Carey herself has such a huge fan base being around for so long but this video was one of her older ones and the costume in this are crop tops and short shorts which are something which are very popular today for teenagers.
There isn't really any narrative in this video we just see her in different areas around a theme park, which helps show her happiness and the fun of the song because theme parks are usually associated with happiness and fun. Having loads of different locations helps keep the video interesting plus her having fun on the rides fits very well of the song because it is a happy song and the excitement in actions is matching the excitement in the lyrics.
The style of this video is very basic with loads of cuts with loads of long, mid and close up shots to help show the environment and show of the singer herself. I would use these types of shots when it comes to my own music video because by switching up the shot types and not keeping everything the same keeps the audience interested and not expecting what to see next rather than just one shot type throughout the whole thing.
Chris Brown - Love More
In this music we see a completely different style of everything compared to the previous two videos. The narrative in this video is that we have a little intro to the song before we actually get to the song, it shows him forgetting about going to club which relates to his audience because they are mainly all teenagers and girls who are in their 20's and go to the club a lot. We then see him get to the club and have a few dance scenes but then that is when the narrative ends, after that we just see club scenes that match the energy of the song.
The costume Chris Brown has in this video is very up to date, having in style clothes and jewelry it attracts his large female audience which make them like him even more because they find him attractive. Throughout the video we only see him in two outfits.
The style of this video is very fast pace editing which cuts a lot to the beat, the large use of colours in this video also adds the song and also it being set in a club helps add to the genre of the music. There are loads of close ups to show the lip syncing scenes and loads of long shots to show the dancing scenes which again to his audience make them even more attracted to him because of his skills in dancing.
Big Sean - Beware
In this music video we see something that is very edited all the way through the video, which to me makes it unique the heavy edited video goes very well with the Rap/Hip-Hop song. The video has a mysterious effect to it as well as the song, we can't really see the artist that are featured in this video we just see a lot of silhouettes and outlines of them and of them filled in with a design.
There isn't really any narrative in the music video itself but there is a narrative within the song so the video doesn't necessarily need and narrative because the song speaks for itself. We just see different shots with each artist mainly close ups and mid shots. Because the message is so clear to the audience it makes it so easy for them to relate to the song, which is similar to the song I want to do because I feel that the song has a strong message and its not hard to understand so you don't exactly need loads of narrative in the video.
The costume in this music video you cannot really tell because everything as I said before is so heavily edited over its hard to make out how they are dressed.
Ashanti - Mesmerize
In this music video we see them try to re-create a scene from Greece when she comes out in the end and changes her appearance for a guy she likes. This video has a clear love story narrative throughout and we see this throughout the music video again similar to the previous video with Mariah Carey we see her in a theme park again or a fair and the excitement and fun of the atmosphere adds to the song.
The style of this video has loads of cuts to showcase all around the park, with loads of cuts with people enjoying themselves. The costumes in this video shows no real relevance to this current age but because they are trying to reference something else people who have seen what they are referencing will get what they are trying to recreate.
During the third week of school I started to look at a range of unsigned artist, browsing through loads until I found one which I thought would suit me best and one which I really liked. The website I used when finding my artist was unsigned.com, after hours of searching I finally found my artist. The name of the artist I choose was THICKE and they were a girl group but if you were to listen to them without a picture you would think it is one person. The song I had chosen is 'Let U Go' and it is a R&B/Soul/Pop song which immediately as soon as I heard I really liked. The artist I have chosen is american and are based in Los Angeles, California. After finding my artist and song I then had to go and analyse lyrics by firstly writing a transcript of them by listening to the song and then analyzing them finding the true meaning behind the song. And the message it is trying to put across to the audience. We then looked at beachcoming and looked at 5 music videos in which influenced me in the ways in which I want to create my own music video.
The section I was allocated was 3:20-3:41. The style of music video my partner Zahra and myself had to do was impressionist, which means An impressionist styled music video is one that the imagery matches the mood, but the video has nothing to do with it. So we though because the song is such an up beat and happy song we would create something that fits into that vibe, by having a lively, happy and confident scene we think fits it very well.
Before filming we made a plan of what each of the shots were although we were only allocated 20 seconds of the music video we had to include quite a lot of shots because of the fast pace of the song, plus we though the more shots we include to more interesting it would be for the audience to look at.
Stuart Hall came up with the theory that there are three ways in which an audience can decipher a media text whether it be a music video, picture, song etc. His theory included three readings which view a media text at a different light. The three readings are: Dominant Reading(also known as the preferred reading) - This reading is when the audience reciprocates the media text the way media producers envisioned them too. Having their original views shown through the media text and the audience agreeing and understanding what they are trying to get across. Negotiated Reading - This reading is when the audience partially agrees with what the product is trying to show although they may disagree with some parts due to their own personal opinions/thoughts or past views on whatever is trying to be shown. Oppostional Reading - This reading is when the audience absolutely disagree with the products message. This reading is also influence by ones personal views on certain things.
Representation - The process whereby media the construct versions of people, places and events in images , words and sounds for transmission through media texts on the audience.
Dominant Reading: In the video “Wrecking ball” Miley Cyrus is portrayed to us as a promiscuous yet vulnerable female. Certain shots in the music video allows us to believe that she is acting in a very unchaste way exposing her body on camera also having shots where we can tell she is fully naked it allows the audience to believe she is trying to be promiscuous. The vulnerable side comes from the close up shots we see when she is directly staring into the lens we see deep emotion in her facial expressions which makes her look quite sad but also her surrounding being all white helps add pureness causing it to be more vulnerable. Also by just seeing her face and shoulders shown in those shots helps add to the vulnerability and makes her look weak in a way. Negotiated Reading: The negotiated reading of this music video would be we see her acting more adult like in a seductive way, trying to break away from the Disney girl stereotype. People are so used to seeing her typical good girl role, which in the first place was Hannah Montana so when they see her now trying to break free from those stereotypes we start to get either a negative reaction from the audience or a positive one. This all depends if you are a huge fan of her to start off with or not. A dedicated fan would understand that she’s growing up and can’t stay the little girl that they first saw on television and others would view it as why is she acting like this? Is it necessary for you to present yourself to the public like this downgrading yourself just to prove a point that you’re growing up. Oppositional reading:The oppositional reading of this music video would be if looked at in detail would be firstly the avid use of the colour white in this video helps represent innocence and purity because usually white is associated with those things, although people could say that the use of this colour and the effect it is suppose to have doesn't work due to other things that happen in the video which do not give off the same effect. The scenes which include nudity could be intercepted as vulnerability because herself being bare back and some positions she put it gives us the feeling that shes helpless. Although that could be read as her being very wild and not vulnerable at all, being seen as her showing of her body degrading herself and women in general. And lastly the re-occurring hammer could represent the pain element of the video, because the song is about a relationship and a break-up which brings pain and to show pain in the video we see her in a few close ups with a hammer. We see her licking the hammer which could mean she likes pain, which gives mixed signals to the audience.
Andrew Goodwins Theory (1992) 'Voyeurism'
Andrew Goodwin believed that there are 5 parts of a music video which and audience look at which are: - "Thought Beats - Seeing the sound" - "Narrative and Performance" - "The Star Image" - "Relation of Visuals to Song" - Technical Aspects of Music Video" Star image is key in Goodwins theory because he believed that mainly in the music industry the way in which someone was presented to the public would receive sensual gratification. In class to show this theory my partner and I had to put together a person using famous singers body parts who are idolised.
As you can see here what we did where we picked different parts from different females and made them all into one. We used people such as Naya Rivera, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Ciara, to show voyeurism.
Laura Mulvey - The Male Gaze
The Male Gaze concept was invented by Laura Mulvey. She believed that it was something that deals with how an audience views people. Laura Mulvey originated the phrase "Male Gaze" in 1975 and believed that within a male audience people have to view the the main characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. Feminists can view it in three ways which are: - The way men view women - How women view themselves - How women view other women The male gaze includes when the camera lingers around a females attractive areas such as their curves, legs, and other feminine body parts. By doing so you cause the "Male Gaze" when women are presented like this they get a mans reaction. This causes women to be objectified and looked at no more than just for pleasurable experience, where as when women see things like this they either want to be just like it or react completely opposite to the "Male Gaze" being degraded and not impressed. A theorist Jonathan Schroeder (1998) believed : "to gaze implies more than to look at - it signifies a physiological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze" The power point below shows different music videos empowering and objectifying women:
For the video remake we were put into pairs and were given a section of the song Thrift Shop to create a music video for, my partner and myself were given 20 seconds of the song and were allocated to do a music video with an interperative style. Before actually filming we had to create a shot list which included what each shot was going to be, which included what the shot type was, the duration of the shot and what movement would be happening in each shot. For example in shot one we would have a girl burst through the doors. The impact that this has on our planning for cratiung a music video refreshed my memory on the steps taken to create a piece of work and the gradual build up to work. The technical skills used where able that I were able to refresh my memory on the different camera shots and the different techniques whilst filming.
Neales theory: A system of orientations, expectations and conventions which circulate between industry, text and subject.
The mise-en-scene within this music video shows a lavish lifestyle, showing off a quite expensive surrounding as well as props to give the audience the impression of someone who is very wealthy, some props that we are shown in the video are expensive cars, jewelry and a big house. The lighting and colour scheme throughout the music video include a lot of warm tones, creams, golds and whites. Using these colours it gives the video a very clean, crisp and relaxed look which helps it make look like a typical hip-hop video. There is slight narrative used within the video as we are shown a younger version of the artist throughout the video. When it comes to editing everything is slow pace to help give off the feel and effect of the song, the constant use of fades throughout helps to create almost a hazed effect. Throughout the video it is made clear to the audience who the focal point is, by the placing of objects and people around him, also the camera angles help to determine who the star of the video is is well. Again slow movements with the camera and nothing to crazy to make the video seem like a typical hip-hop/rap video.
Repetition and Difference
This music video is the genre of rock and follows some of the conventions of a rock video, which include the live performance, showing off the instruments and key items such as electric guitars, drums etc. yet they parody other male bands bringing out humor from past videos. Blink 182 take some conventions of other boy-bands videos who do not fit into the rock category and exaggerate them to make it clear that they are making fun out of them. Such as the scenes in this music video where we see them in black and white and walking along the beach. Where we see a true representation of a rock video is where we see the party scene and that's when you can tell that they are truly being themselves.
David Bordwell (1989)
Bordwells theory works to my advantage firstly because it gives you so much more freedom when filming and you are open to so many more ideas for your music video. You can also target a bigger audience when doing this because someone may not like the genre of the music but the actual music video its self may attract someone and it may be something they they enjoy watching.
The song that I would like to use is by a girl group called THICKE but when listening to them you would only think there is one singer so for my music video I would only use one main female singer and some back-up vocalist here and there.
About the artist: "The trio has redefined the “girl band” concept with their own unique musical style. THICKE’s seemingly effortless harmonies leave audiences mesmerized and yearning for more. Their formula for success…a touch of old school, and a pinch of Dirty South blended with a dash of R & B flavor. "
I think that this song would be perfect for me to create a music video to because it has perfect elements in it which allow me to create certain scenes which I would like to be in my music video.
Interests: R'n'b music, shopping, boys(relationships), going out (parties) Location: Worldwide but mainly the UK and USA Ethnicity: All races (white, asian, black etc.)
Analysing Lyrics
(VERSE 1)
I’m so confused
I don’t know why I let you treat me like you do
We’ve got issues
I let you walk in and out of my life and that’s not right
So much hurt
So much pain
I never thought that I could feel like this but I do
Being in a relationship with you is like a roller-coaster.
In this first verse we start to discover that she's in a relationship and we learn that she has been cheated on or hurt in some way by her boyfriend, she describes her emotions to the audience.
(CHORUS)
(and it all ends right there right there)
I let the rain fall down on me
I let you get away with everything(woooaahh)
I let you slide
My tears are high
to cover up mistakes you made(ooohhh heyyyy)
I let the rain fall down on me (I let it fall)
I let you get away with everything(woooaahh)
I let you slide
My tears are high
to cover up mistakes you made
In the chorus we learn that no matter what her boyfriend does she always lets him get away with it because she loves him a lot. Again she is talking about the sad emotions he has made her feel and talking about how he has treated her wrong.
(VERSE 2)
no more sleepless nights
Or waiting for you to unlock the door and come inside
I’ve gotta get a hold of myself
Cause I have too much pride
(For you to think that you can do the things you do )
I know that you don’t love me like you say you do
(I have to tell myself to just let go of you)
(spoken)
(Male)I’m sorry
(band member)Apology not accepted
In the second verse we finally see her taking a stand not waiting around for her boyfriend and in the end not forgiving her how he has treated her. She talks about how she is going to change.
(CHORUS)
(and it all ends right there right there)
I let the rain fall down on me(ooohh)
I let you get away with everything (yes I did)
I let you slide
My tears are high
to cover up mistakes you made ohh the rain falls down (yeaaahhh)
I let the rain fall down on me
I let you get away with everything (wooahhhh)
I let you slide
My tears are high (high)
to cover up mistakes you made
In the chorus we learn that no matter what her boyfriend does she always lets him get away with it because she loves him a lot. Again she is talking about the sad emotions he has made her feel and talking about how he has treated her wrong.
(BRIDGE)
Everything you did baby
I let you slide
Woaah
Everything you did baby
I let you slide
woooaahhhh
(I ,I gotta let you go repeated to the end)
Never said anything to hurt you baby
(Let you goo)Yeaahhhh
ohhh
ohhhohhhhhhh
I Yeaahhhhh
(Let you goooo)
Woaahhhh
I’m sorry(male)
Let you goooooo
I’m sorry (male)
In the bridge we learn that she is almost reminiscing on everything, looking back at the mistakes he made and how she always let them "slide".
Analysing the Music
The very soft, slow beat in the song I have chosen works well with the very soulful voices on the song. The whole song gives of a very soothing vibe although they are singing about something quite serious. The main instruments that you can hear in the song are the base and slight hints of an acoustic guitar giving it a typical but very nice r'n'b feel. The voices in the song are very empowering so the fact that the instrumental doesn't over power the voices shows off the artist true talent.
Analysing the tempo
The tempo throughout the whole song remains the same, keeping it very calm and steady but as we get to parts in the song which require more emotion and soul we feel the tempo slowly rising.
How I would use the song in a music video
How I would use this song in my music video is firstly I feel that the slow face very relaxed feeling you get from it would work very well with a very slow pace editing style, using loads of fades from one scene to another and because of the softness of the song it would fit to the music.
Colour scheme wise I would either use only black and white or a video with loads of warm tones. By taking out the colour from the video helps add to the effect of the song, also being an r'n'b song the black and white effect fits in well. Same thing goes for a video with loads of warm tones not using a large palette of colours will help send the message which is within the song.
Also for the speaking parts in the song I could have a very effective scene of the male talking to the female or vice versa.
For this type of song I would use a lot of green screen with loads of scenes of her lip syncing and really feeling the music and moving her body to the music because the song is a very emotional song. So if I were to have scenes which didn't focus as much on her then I think it would take away from the song.
In week one of school we learned about genre and theory which included Neales theory which was a system of orientations, expectations and conventions which circulate between industry, text and subject. And we also learned about David Bordwells theory which was that any theme can appear in any genre.
I also learnt about representations and theory which included Stuart Hall's - Encoding and Decoding with his three different readings. Also learning about Andrew Goodwins 'Voyeurism' theory and Laura Mulvey's Male gaze.
Lastly in week one we had to go onto a website called unsigned.com and search for an artist that we wanted to use. In the end after searching I decided to use an artist called THICKE and the name of their song is 'Let u go'
What are your initial ideas for advanced portfolio?
My initial ideas are that I want to create a music video which fits the genre of R&B by using an R&B song, I would want my video to have a very calm effect to it and also for everything to be in black and white with very good lighting to help set the mood of an R&B song.
Who would you like to work with?
I would like to work with Abir Mohammad because although he wasn't in my class last year we are good friends and we get along very well and are very open with our ideas and we know how to work with each other due to other lessons we have had together. Creatively Abir and myself are very different but when we work together we always take the good points for each others ideas to create something that we are both very pleased with.
What are your hopes and fears about the project?
My hopes for this music video are that I hope to create a enjoyable music video with my partner which fits the genre we want to do and to our target audience is something they would enjoy and want to watch again. My fears for this music video are that because I want to do the music video in black and white I don't want it to come across as boring to my target audience because if there is no colour it could give the wrong effect.
The creativity of our preliminary task was quite successful. Our task was based on an interrogation scene which there would be random flashbacks of the crime that they have committed and then the two characters inside the interrogation room. I though our idea was quite original because compared to our classmates ideas it was very different. Plus at the time we were working in a group of three so when it came to combining our ideas we picked the best things from each of our ideas and merged them together to be able to create the perfect scenario.
How this improved our opening sequence was firstly we followed the same way we exchanged ideas the first time, my partner and I work very well together and when coming up with ideas we tend to both pitch our idea to each other and then take the best part from each of ideas and merge them together to create our BSR.
Research and Planning
Research and planning was simple and allowed me to be able to have a plan of what everything I wanted to do was and acted as a guide to me when filming. Research included different camera/shot types and how to use them. Research allowed me later on to be able to use the different camera/shot types more confidently and use them in the correct way.
This helped me improve when it came to my BSR because it allowed me to have some experience of planning and I knew the worth of research and planning and how much it can help you when it comes to production.
Post-Production used last year
iMovie - This was used during post-production. This program was used because it was the best thing to be able to edit our opening sequence on. Having used iMovie before from previous projects I had gathered up a good understanding on how to use it but this time we were using a newer version of iMovie but things were practically the same for me so I didn't notice a huge difference. Using this programme it allows you to do all that you need to do and because we are creating something which is BSR themed the editing did not have to be something that was very fancy so all we basically needed to know was how to cut. Using iMovie again allowed me to increase my experience that I already have with it. It has made me become more confident with the software and I can now use the new iMovie just as well as the old one.
Live type - This was used during post-production. This was used to be able to create our credits. Using this piece programme at first I found hard to use with all different options on how to use different things I was very confused in the beginning. But over time after being taught I started to learn how to use it properly. Using this programme rather than other ones helped our graphics turn out cleaner and allowed us to be able to experiment and have more options when it came to designing graphics. Live type being a new programme to use I have developed my skill in this programme, especially when it comes to designing and typography I have improved.
Final Cut - This was used during post-production. We used this to edit some of our videos together and out opening sequence. When using this it allowed us to do some things which we were limited to do using iMovie, although we found the programme complicated and tricky to use at times by using it, it has made out videos better. Again this being a new programme that I have used it has helped develop my editing skills being able to do new things with my video making them look better.
Conventions applied to my work
Film four usually produces movies which are British Social Realism and deal with topics which people in the UK can relate
to. Working with very low budgets they try to create the most realistic type of films which are not far-fetched and stick the
codes and conventions of BSR.
When it came to planning our idea we wanted to come up with something which was not common in BSR films and this was
aiming it towards a more middle class audience. When planning all of our ideas we came up with loads of good ideas but
non that specifically matched a British social realism film. We then picked an idea that matched British Social Realism the
most and decided to expand on it developing our idea. Taking inspiration from loads of other successful British Social
Realism films we tried to involve it into our idea.
After we had finalized our idea we then started to develop on the characters making each of them relatable in a certain
way all having problems that people every day go through. Our developed idea change after many discussions with my
partner we decided to make the main character Asian following the stereotypical representations of Asian male abuse in
our opening sequence. We took inspiration from other British Social Realism films such as ‘Looking For Eric’ and ‘This Is
England’.
During pre–production we started to create our graphics and titles, we aimed to create something that would be used in
Film4 not going to overboard sticking to the typical conventions. We tested many different fonts till we came to a
conclusion on which one to use, we used dafont.com to be choose a font because the font which were already downloaded
on the programme we were using did not match to what we wanted and felt like it didn't really relate to our sequence at
all.
Thinking about other film4 films when creating our narrative we watched and studied a lot of other film four films till we
came to what we wanted ours to be, we wanted our idea to be original and something which has not really been done
before.
Here are some more conventions shown in my work last year:
This shot shows the stress of work that it built up on our character we see him in an office with the continuance of folders
pilling up with him not being able to keep up, this relates to our social group by firstly them being able to understand what
are character is going through but also being able to understand that sometimes it is just too much work for one person to
handle alone and the stress created at work will then have an effect on his home life. The images help show how established
he is as a person firstly by costume and setting we are shown how he has his own office helping to show his status and that
he is quite high up job wise to have his own office. The modern office also helps fit with our audience because it doesn't look
out of date and looks like a real work place office. The editing that was used here was a cross dissolve this helped to show
the passing of time because it is what we wanted to show.
The editing we used here was firstly we
created continuity within the male character
picking up a bottle and placing from the table
and taking it upstairs. We wanted the bottle
to be the focus because its where the
continuity is placed on. Having it filmed at
two different angles shows it at two different
view points and also allows to show more of
the house and where he lives.
The mise-en-scene between both scenes contrast and show a big difference. The colour scheme and set up show the change
of scene and help show two different moods. The first scene shows a very grey and dull part of the sequence help showing
the mood that our character is in . The bright colours of the folders help being emphasis to them, making them the focal
point of our shot. The second scene follows the colour scheme of red, it helps to represent and create a passionate and
romantic scene between to characters but it corrupted when our male character walks in in all black takes the alcohol and
walks straight upstairs.
Here we filmed continuity we see this here through her walking through the door and entering the kitchen and then cut to her walking towards the sink showing her from another angle. The first picture shows a long shot to help
show the whole scene and environment. Then the second image is an mid-shot and it helps shows a new shot and a closer view of her and what she is carrying. The last shot is a mid shot is well and shows the exact same thing as the first but from another angle. The continuity shown here flows really well when played due to the tight editing. The sound at this point really starts to build up helping creating tension leading to the climax where we then see her cry at the end of our sequence because she cannot take it any more.
The mise-en-scene in these three shots all use artificial lighting from the
lamps on the wall and no extra light was used in this shot, the lack of lighting
and the slightly dull surroundings help to show the mood of the character and
also sets the scene. If everything was really bright it wouldn't really fit in with
the scene and would take away from the mood created.
The typography created was very simple and we placed it along the corners
and sides of the screen, by placing them in these ways it allows the audience
to be able to focus on the movement on screen but also the movement of the
credits so it is not in the way of what is going on.
This shot shows a romantic scene and helps create a mood which is then crushed by our male character.
In this shot we see a close up of our main female character. The close up helps to show the emotion of our character and helps to show her feelings. At this point in the sequence we are shown her finally breaking down, after everything that she has been through we see her being breaking down crying, due to the neglect from her husband and earlier as we see her trying to make an effort for him, making dinner etc. He completely ignores her. The character herself in this shot is very dark and the surrounding is very bright helping to show a contrast.
In this shot we see a close up/mid shot of our main female character. We see her resulting to alcohol helping to show the theme of alcohol, this shot is quite dark which helps relate to the mood created also the fact that she is picking between the two shows the range of alcohol available to her and also the fact that she is choosing helps to show how she doesn’t really drink and she has to read and see what’s in it etc. because she doesn’t usually drink.
In this shot we see our main male character entering his car,
the dull shot shows him on his way home from work, the
anchorage of the car helps to show his wealth and how he
does drive a Mercedes and the car helps show the power he
has and almost represents him as a person. His dark costume
helps represent his character by the showing the evil in him.
Also you get to see a bit of the environment showing the
houses and what type of neighborhood he lives in showing
