Analysis of 'Let U Go' by Thicke

"THICKE - Let U Go"

The song that I would like to use is by a girl group called THICKE but when listening to them you would only think there is one singer so for my music video I would only use one main female singer and some back-up vocalist here and there.

About the artist: "The trio has redefined the “girl band” concept with their own unique musical style. THICKE’s seemingly effortless harmonies leave audiences mesmerized and yearning for more.  Their formula for success…a touch of old school, and a pinch of Dirty South blended with a dash of R & B flavor. "

I think that this song would be perfect for me to create a music video to because it has perfect elements in it which allow me to create certain scenes which I would like to be in my music video.
The trio includes:

  • Sha'Leah Nicole - Group Member
  • Shaunise Renee' - Group Member
  • RaVaughn Nichelle - Group Member

Analysing Lyrics

(VERSE 1)

I’m so confused
I don’t know why I let you treat me like you do
We’ve got issues
I let you walk in and out of my life and that’s not right
So much hurt
So much pain
I never thought that I could feel like this but I do
Being in a relationship with you is like a roller-coaster.

In this first verse we start to discover that she's in a relationship and we learn that she has been cheated on or  hurt in some way by her boyfriend, she describes her emotions to the audience.

(CHORUS)

(and it all ends right there right there)
I let the rain fall down on me

I let you get away with everything (woooaahh)

I let you slide

My tears are high
to cover up mistakes you made (ooohhh heyyyy)
I let the rain fall down on me (I let it fall)
I let you get away with everything (woooaahh)
I let you slide
My tears are high
to cover up mistakes you made

In the chorus we learn that no matter what her boyfriend does she always lets him get away with it because she loves him a lot. Again she is talking about the sad emotions he has made her feel and talking about how he has treated her wrong.

(VERSE 2)
no more sleepless nights
Or waiting for you to unlock the door and come inside
I’ve gotta get a hold of myself
Cause I have too much pride
(For you to think that you can do the things you do )
I know that you don’t love me like you say you do
(I have to tell myself to just let go of you)
(spoken)
(Male)I’m sorry
(band member)Apology not accepted

In the second verse we finally see her taking a stand not waiting around for her boyfriend and in the end not forgiving her how he has treated her. She talks about how she is going to change.

(CHORUS)

(and it all ends right there right there)

I let the rain fall down on me (ooohh)

I let you get away with everything (yes I did)

I let you slide
My tears are high
to cover up mistakes you made ohh the rain falls down (yeaaahhh)
I let the rain fall down on me
I let you get away with everything (wooahhhh)
I let you slide
My tears are high (high)
to cover up mistakes you made

In the chorus we learn that no matter what her boyfriend does she always lets him get away with it because she loves him a lot. Again she is talking about the sad emotions he has made her feel and talking about how he has treated her wrong.

(BRIDGE)

Everything you did baby

I let you slide

Woaah

Everything you did baby
I let you slide
woooaahhhh
(I ,I gotta let you go repeated to the end)
Never said anything to hurt you baby
(Let you goo)Yeaahhhh
ohhh
ohhhohhhhhhh
I Yeaahhhhh
(Let you goooo)
Woaahhhh
I’m sorry(male)
Let you goooooo

I’m sorry (male)

In the bridge we learn that she is almost reminiscing on everything, looking back at the mistakes he made and how she always let them "slide".

Analysing the Music

The very soft, slow beat in the song I have chosen works well with the very soulful voices on the song. The whole song gives of a very soothing vibe although they are singing about something quite serious. The main instruments that you can hear in the song are the base and slight hints of an acoustic guitar giving it a typical but very nice r'n'b feel. The voices in the song are very empowering so the fact that the instrumental doesn't over power the voices shows off the artist true talent.

Analysing the tempo

The tempo throughout the whole song remains the same, keeping it very calm and steady but as we get to parts in the song which require more emotion and soul we feel the tempo slowly rising.

How I would use the song in a music video

How I would use this song in my music video is firstly I feel that the slow face very relaxed feeling you get from it would work very well with a very slow pace editing style, using loads of fades from one scene to another and because of the softness of the song it would fit to the music.

Colour scheme wise I would either use only black and white or a video with loads of warm tones. By taking out the colour from the video helps add to the effect of the song, also being an r'n'b song the black and white effect fits in well. Same thing goes for a video with loads of warm tones not using a large palette of colours will help send the message which is within the song.

Also for the speaking parts in the song I could have a very effective scene of the male talking to the female or vice versa.

For this type of song I would use a lot of green screen with loads of scenes of her lip syncing and really feeling the music and moving her body to the music because the song is a very emotional song. So if I were to have scenes which didn't focus as much on her then I think it would take away from the song.
