Genre Theory

Neales theory: A system of orientations, expectations and conventions which circulate between industry, text and subject.

The mise-en-scene within this music video shows a lavish lifestyle, showing off a quite expensive surrounding as well as props to give the audience the impression of someone who is very wealthy, some props that we are shown in the video are expensive cars, jewelry and a big house. The lighting and colour scheme throughout the music video include a lot of warm tones, creams, golds and whites. Using these colours it gives the video a very clean, crisp and relaxed look which helps it make look like a typical hip-hop video.  There is slight narrative used within the video as we are shown a younger version of the artist throughout the video. When it comes to editing everything is slow pace to help give off the feel and effect of the song, the constant use of fades throughout helps to create almost a hazed effect. Throughout the video it is made clear to the audience who the focal point is, by the placing of objects and people around him, also the camera angles help to determine who the star of the video is is well. Again slow movements with the camera and nothing to crazy to make the video seem like a typical hip-hop/rap video.

Repetition and Difference

This music video is the genre of rock and follows some of the conventions of a rock video, which include the live performance, showing off the instruments and key items such as electric guitars, drums etc. yet they parody other male bands bringing out humor from past videos. Blink 182 take some conventions of other boy-bands videos who do not fit into the rock category and exaggerate them to make it clear that they are making fun out of them. Such as the scenes in this music video where we see them in black and white and walking along the beach. Where we see a true representation of a rock video is where we see the party scene and that's when you can tell that they are truly being themselves.

David Bordwell (1989)

Bordwells theory works to my advantage firstly because it gives you so much more freedom when filming and you are open to so many more ideas for your music video. You can also target a bigger audience when doing this because someone may not like the genre of the music but the actual music video its self may attract someone and it may be something they they enjoy watching.
